Dealing with No deal in Ireland, news by Hebei Longsheng

Negotiations between the EU and U.K. to secure a trade deal for 2021 and beyond this week are unlikely to yield much progress. The positions of the two sides are entrenched regarding the style of deal wanted: the EU wants a full deal per last year’s Political Declaration; the U.K. wants a narrower goods-focused arrangement. The next step will be a heads-of-state meeting on June 18.

Without a deal the prospect for customs arrangements next year is bleak. That’s leading some logistics operators to consider alternative arrangements. Many Irish exports to the U.S., for example, rely on transshipments via the U.K.

Container line ICL is launching a new, direct service from Cork to the U.S. to avoid shipping via the U.K. Seaborne exports from Ireland to the U.S. rose by 8.6% year over year in the 12 months to April 30.

Shipments on Ireland-to-U.S.-via-U.K. routes are led by major drinks makers including Diageo and Pernod Ricard whose shipments increased by 12.5% and 6.4% year over year in the past 12 months.
