Abbott, Roche test kit shipments slip, news by Hebei Longsheng metals

The U.S. trade authorities have been asked by Congress to review supplies of medical goods needed in the fight against COVID-19. A list of products with matching tariff codes had been previously identified, though a recent shift in tariffs makes the analysis more complex.

Panjiva’s analysis shows that imports of products across protection, diagnostics and treatment likely crested in June with imports in July down by 13.0% versus June. The fastest decline was in testing supplies where imports of test kits and machinery fell by 22.8%. Shipments of treatment supplies including ventilators fell by 13.3%.

For testing kits specifically there was a 35.1% drop in imports after a surge in deliveries in June which may have continued in August with seaborne shipments down by a further 11.6% versus July.

The drop in seaborne imports of testing kits has been widespread with notable declines in shipments by Abbott Labs and Roche Holding of 72.7% and 50.0% respectively in August versus July. Imports linked to Johnson & Johnson fell the slowest with a dip of just 3.3%.
